Santorum: This Isn’t Your Grandfather’s Democratic Party

Speaking in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Wednesday, Rick Santorum reacted to the first Democratic debate with amazement at how radical today’s Democratic Party has become.

Santorum said he remembers his grandfather had pictures of Jesus, the pope, and John F. Kennedy on the wall in his house. My, how things have changed.

“If you watched that debate and looked at some of the moral discussions that were going on there you would be appalled by it,” he said.

From the Mason City Globe Gazette:

Santorum thought it showed how the Democratic Party ‘is increasingly marginalizing itself by being so far out there to the left.’

‘The amazing thing is you have an avowed socialist who is actually to the right of some of the people on that stage on some issues,’ he said.

The debate did show a contrast between those candidates and the GOP field may help voters choose a candidate to support, he said.

‘It was amazing to see how far left they want to go,’ Santorum said about the five Democratic hopefuls who debated in Las Vegas. ‘They disavow capitalism and talk about socialism being a good thing. This is a new day in American politics when you see those kinds of extreme positions and really a rejection of what has brought this country to where it is today.’

Santorum also said the GOP needs to expand its pro-life message to include compassion for “people struggling with disabilities and the whole range of issues, people struggling in poverty, people who are working and wanting to do better.”
