4,200+ Migrant Minors In CBP Detention.
An update on the border situation, from CBS: “As of Sunday morning, U.S. Border Patrol was holding more than 4,200 unaccompanied migrant children in short-term holding facilities, including jail-like stations unfit to house minors.” This represents a 31 percent increase from the previous week, with an average of 565 minors entering CBP custody each day.
Still, 81 percent of Democrats reportedly favor what President Joe Biden is doing on immigration. The House of Representatives will take up immigration reform legislation this week, including the American Dream and Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which are separate measures from President Joe Biden’s U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021. The first piece of legislation would create legal pathways to citizenship for individuals brought to the U.S. illegally as children, while the second would create a process for individuals who have worked at least 180 days in agriculture over the past 2 years to earn a green card.
Biden Team Skips The Sunday Shows.
Right after blitzing through Biden’s first major legislative win, his team took a page from their boss’s playbook and spent the weekend offline. As the Biden family unwound in Wilmington, Biden officials, except for Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and medical staff, were nowhere to be seen on the Sunday morning network shows. According to producers, the White House did not make senior communications staff available or fulfill media requests for Biden, vice president Kamala Harris, or chief of staff Ron Klain.
In response to questions upon his return to the White House Sunday evening, Biden again declined to join Democrats in pressuring New York governor Andrew Cuomo to resign.
“I think the investigation is underway and we should see what it brings us,” Biden said.
Earlier Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi similarly did not join calls to resign but urged Cuomo to “look inside his heart” for the answer.
“And what I’m saying is the governor should look inside his heart—he loves New York—to see if he can govern effectively. I think we should see the results of the investigation,” she added.
Japan To Visit White House In April.
Biden’s first foreign leader visit to the White House is reportedly on the calendar: Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is set to visit Washington, D.C., on April 9, Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper reported Sunday. In 2017, former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was President Donald Trump’s first foreign leader to visit the White House. U.S. and Japanese officials are also holding meetings in Tokyo this week.
