The first day of the Republican National Convention was a strong day throughout and finished on a high note.

First, the Republican delegates ratified the most conservative party platform in decades. The platform puts the Democrats on defense like never before on critical issues like life, marriage, and religious freedom. It endorsed the First Amendment Defense Act, important legislation that will protect Christian business owners and organizations from government persecution for their sincerely held beliefs on marriage. The platform also went on offense on abortion by advocating for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, a ban on abortion after 20 weeks, and for defunding Planned Parenthood.

There was a moment of chaos on the convention floor when an effort to modify the rules passed by the rules committee last week failed. The Colorado delegation walked off the floor in protest, and Ken Cuccinelli, one of the Virginia delegates and a former Virginia gubernatorial candidate, threw his credentials on the ground in disgust.

The main program began at 8:00 p.m. A number of impressive speakers delivered remarks, including Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York, who lauded America’s men and women in blue for their heroic service.

The highlight of the night, at least for me, was Melania Trump. Donald Trump gave her a brief introduction after an absolutely insane entrance on to the stage to Queen’s “We Are The Champions.” Melania was elegant, poised, and captivating. She had the crowd on their feet multiple times and owned the moment.
