Yesterday, Gallup released some abortion policy-related poll numbers from its 2016 Values and Beliefs survey. The title on the release: “Most Pro-Life Americans Unsure About Trump’s Abortion Views”.
This wasn’t necessarily misleading. After all, the polling did show that a majority of Americans (56 percent) — and a larger majority of self-identified pro-lifers (63 percent) — could not say whether they agreed or disagreed with Trump’s abortion stance. As Trump’s views on life become more publicized in the lead up to November, one would expect these numbers to decline.
However, the far more interesting, and perhaps politically inconvenient, survey finding came just below. According to the poll, just 22 percent of respondents said they agreed with Hillary Clinton’s views on abortion, while 32 percent disagreed (46 percent had no opinion).
In contrast to Trump, Clinton’s abortion stance is well documented at this point: she supports all abortion, on demand, for any reason, up until the moment of birth, paid for by taxpayers. She has been quite vocal about her views during the campaign and has even criticized the media for failing to bring the issue up more often. And, as we now know, less than a quarter of Americans agree with her.
Trump has a prime opportunity to put Clinton on the defensive on an issue where she is clearly outside the mainstream, and a further opportunity to win over pro-lifers, 23 percent of whom say they will only vote for a candidate who shares their views on life. Will he be up to the task?
