Yesterday, President Trump launched his Tax Cut Kickoff Tour in epic fashion by calling out Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) — who is up for re-election in 2018 — as one of the potentially critical votes in enacting tax reform.
Turning up the pressure on vulnerable Senate Democrats like McCaskill, Trump touted the newly revised GDP estimate showing the U.S. economy expanded at 3 percent in his first full quarter as President.
Trump’s message to the American people was clear: We must keep this momentum going by passing tax cuts, and politicians should not stand in the way of meaningful economic growth.
As President Trump noted, if Congress delivers on tax relief for American families, reduces the corporate tax rate to 15 percent, and provides a lower tax rate for dollars repatriated from overseas, we will sustain our current 3 percent economic growth (at the very least) resulting in 12 million new jobs and $10 trillion in new economic activity over the next decade.
President Trump also hit the nail on the head when he explained that “we need a tax code that is simple, fair, and easy to understand” or we risk falling behind in a world of steadily increasing competition. The rest of the world certainly aren’t sitting on their hands while Congress spars over changes to our outdated tax code; they are working to gain an edge.
Kudos to President Trump for taking the tax cut fight directly to Senate Democrats who stand in opposition to his pro-growth agenda.
One of the reasons why Trump emerged victorious in the Republican primary last year was that voters saw him as a fighter. Yesterday, the President revealed his willingness to go directly after obstructionist Democrats to fight for America’s future.
If Trump’s speech yesterday was a preview of how hard he is willing to push for tax reform, the prospects of enacting tax cuts “just got 10 feet higher.”
