New Poll Suggests Reports of Trump’s Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

A new USA Today/Suffolk University national poll released today shows Donald Trump with a comfortable 10 point lead over his nearest GOP rivals.  Trump registered 23 percent support, while Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina tied for second with 13 percent.  Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and Ted Cruz were the only other candidates to receive more than 2 percent of the vote.

The full results were as follows:

  • Donald Trump – 23%
  • Ben Carson – 13%
  • Carly Fiorina – 13%
  • Marco Rubio – 9%
  • Jeb Bush – 8%
  • Ted Cruz – 6%
  • John Kasich – 2%
  • Mike Huckabee – 2%
  • Rand Paul – 2%
  • Bobby Jindal – 1%
  • Chris Christie – 1%
  • Lindsey Graham – 1%
  • George Pataki – 0%
  • Rick Santorum – 0%

Maggie reported earlier this week on the WSJ/NBC poll which showed Carson in a virtual dead heat with Trump but also noted that the small sample size of that survey (only 230 likely GOP voters) called into question just how much those results could be trusted.

While this poll also had a relatively small sample of only 380 likely Republican voters, with a margin of error of 5 percent, it seems more in line with the other recent Bloomberg and Quinnipiac national polls, which showed Trump with leads of 5 and 8 points, respectively.

It would appear that Trump’s national front runner status remains intact for the time being.
