Thank God for Justice Neil Gorsuch

As is being widely reported, Neil Gorsuch was confirmed today to the Supreme Court by a 54-45 vote.

There are a lot of people to thank for the fact that such a distinguished conservative legal scholar and judge is to take Justice Scalia’s seat at the Court, most importantly Jim DeMint and the Heritage Foundation as well as Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society, both of whom President Trump has publicly acknowledged helped guide his short list of nominees.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should also be thanked for recognizing that the Democrats had already changed the rules of the game and acting accordingly by ending the filibuster. The good, old days when nominees who were not obviously incompetent were confirmed by the Senate, regardless of partisanship, really ended in 1987, when the Democrats turned Judge Robert Bork’s name into a verb. It has just taken a long time for Republicans to notice and accept that fact.

And, of course, thanks to President Donald J. Trump for keeping his promise to appoint a Supreme Court justice of whom his voters can be proud.

Finally, thanks (no thanks to me) to the voters who trusted Donald Trump, who were willing to bet on him, and who gave us this very, very proud moment.
