Yesterday afternoon, Hillary Clinton delivered a speech in which she called Donald Trump and his supporters “racists,” “bigots,” and “hateful.”
Donald Trump responded in swift fashion in a speech a couple hours later:
HRC is using the oldest play in the Dem playbook- when their policies fail, they are left w/this one tired argument!https://t.co/FNbCMmwLTn

…[They’re calling] decent Americans who support this campaign, your campaign, of being racists, which we’re not. It’s the oldest play in the Democratic playbook. When Democratic policies fail, they are left with only this one tired argument, ‘You’re racist. You’re racist. You’re racist.’ They keep saying it. ‘You’re racist.’ It’s a tired, disgusting argument, and it’s so totally predictable. They’re failing so badly. It’s the last refuge of the discredited Democrat politician.
He’s also punched back on race issues, calling Hillary Clinton a “bigot” because her policies have failed minority communities:
TRUMP: Well, she is a bigot. When you look at what’s happening to inner cities, when you look at what’s happening, you look at what’s happening to African-Americans and Hispanics in this country, where she talks all the time, she’s talking, look at where she says the vets are being treated just fine, that it’s over-exaggerated what’s happening to the vets not so long ago…
ANDERSON COOPER: But how is she bigoted? Bigoted is having hatred toward a particular group…
TRUMP: Because she’s selling them down the tubes. Because she’s not doing anything for those communities. She talks a good game. Her policies are bigoted because she knows they’re not going to work.
COOPER: You’re saying she’s personally bigoted?
TRUMP: She is. Of course she is. They’re her policies, she comes out with her policies and others that believe like she does also. But she came out with policies over the years — this is over the years, a long time — she’s totally bigoted. There’s no question about that… I think she has been extremely, extremely bad for African-Americans, I think she’s been extremely bad for Hispanics, you look at what’s happened with her policies and the policies of President Obama and others. Look at the poverty. Look at the rise in poverty. Look at the rise in violence.
COOPER: But hatred is at the core of that? Or dislike of African-Americans?
TRUMP: Or maybe she’s lazy.
Many pundits predicted this would be one of the most negative campaigns in recent memory. Judging by the fact that it’s only August, I’d bet that turns out to be 100 percent true. The gloves are off.
