Instead of detention, presidential candidate Joe Biden is threatening to put ankle bracelets on children as well as the adults who accompany them over the border illegally.
The “moderate” Democrat of the party’s 2020 primary also stated he would end illegal immigrant detention “totally across the board.”
The remarks were made at the VICE News Brown & Black Democrat Presidential Forum:
The former veep is asked: “How exactly would you detain immigrants, if at all, in a Biden administration?”
Biden responds: “The way we did when we reformed the system with DACA. I would not retain them behind bars. They show up. Here’s what they do. They show up sometimes and you have an ankle bracelet and you set a hearing. We have to surge, we have to surge to the border, to the areas where people are being held.”
“Everybody out of prisons,” he says of the detention facilities used extensively during the Obama-Biden adminstration.
“Be in a position where if the most you put on is an ankle bracelet, that you give a date, you’re going to show up for an immigration hearing, and they show up.”
The interviewer asks if this policy is just for “children” or “adults and children.”
Biden responds, “Across the board. Totally across the board.”
He proposes that illegal migrants should instead utilize the legal system to adjudicate their immigration status – the very same courts he contends are “burdened” and “overwhelmed.”
Immigration courts are also highly ineffective and easily allow for alien residents to slip through the cracks: since 1996, nearly 40 percent of all illegal immigrants awaiting court dates never actually showed up for their hearings.
And decriminalizing illegal immigration empirically spikes border crossings, evidenced by the controversial passage of DACA under Biden’s tenure as vice president.
The proposal is so ridiculous, it comes off as another Biden gaffe, but it’s not. Radical policies like these are the new normal for today’s Democratic party.
