WATCH: Trump Vows to “End the Discrimination Against People of Faith”

Start

Religious freedom was at the heart of President Trump’s speech at the Road to Majority conference in Washington, D.C., on Thursday morning.

Exactly one year after they heard from then candidate Trump at last year’s conference, the audience enthusiastically welcomed him back as President.

Trump began by thanking the evangelical Christian crowd for their support: “You didn’t let me down, and I will never, ever let you down. You know that.”

He then promised that his administration will “always support our evangelical community and defend your right and the right of all Americans to follow and to live by the teachings of their faith.”

Trump also encouraged the crowd of 1,000 never to give up:

Nothing worth doing ever came easy, but we know how to fight better than anybody, and we never, ever would give up and we don’t give up. We are winners and we are going to fight and win and have an unbelievable future.

Acknowledging that faith and family values are under attack, the President assured the audience in his typical Trump fashion that he is confident “we will come out bigger and better and stronger than ever. You watch.”

Trump returned to the topic of religious liberty several times throughout his half hour long speech.

We want our pastors speaking out. We want their voices in our public discourse. And we want our children to know the blessings of God. Schools should not be a place that drive out faith and religion, but should welcome faith and religion with wide open beautiful arms.

It is time to put a stop to the attacks on religion. We will end the discrimination against people of faith. Our government will once again celebrate and protect religious freedom.

Trump’s words are backed up by action. He has already signed an executive order on religious freedom that eases IRS restrictions on political activities by churches and ensures that groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor are not forced to pay for contraceptives.

Attendees at yesterday’s speech applauded those actions, giving the President encouragement that even while his integrity was being questioned not far away at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, he can still count on their support.
