Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee continued to talk about religious liberty Wednesday, saying that judicial overreach and the separation of powers would be “the most important issue” of 2016:
“I think the most important issue in the presidential election is: What do we believe the Constitution teaches about the separation of powers, the distribution of powers?” Huckabee told Alisyn Camerota on CNN’s “New Day” on Wednesday.
Huckabee also weighed in on what’s next for Kim Davis:
“She’s made it very clear, as has her attorney yesterday when we had the press conference, that she does not plan to violate her conscience,” Huckabee added. “She’s not going to surrender and give up her basic First Amendment rights, which by the way are expressly clear in the Constitution, nothing in the Constitution says there’s any interest in marriage, but there is absolutely interest in protecting people’s right to religious liberty.”
Huckabee has made the judiciary a major part of his presidential campaign, running extensively on the concept of “judicial tyranny” and pledging to reign in the courts’ authority if elected president. Since Kim Davis was jailed last week, Huckabee has taken the opportunity to highlight the dangers of a rogue judicial branch and to call for stronger conscience protections for people of faith.
