Many conservative states have now banned public entities from mandating the COVID-19 vaccines. This is a step in the right direction, but doesn’t go nearly far enough. Private employers, as well as state and local governments, are still free to impose vaccination requirements on employees. This also must stop. In late November, Willis Towers Watson surveyed 543 large companies whose workforces total 5.2 million employees. They found that 57 percent of employers plan to mandate or already have mandated the COVID-19 vaccines. Many of those employers made their final decision conditional on the OSHA Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) taking effect.
Oakland officials are blocking unvaccinated high school students from attending their own prom. Monte Vista High School in Danville, California booked Oakland’s Scottish Rite Center for its annual prom, a school tradition since at least the 1990s. Dr. Kevin Ahern, the school principal, says that when they booked the venue for the February 12th event, they thought it would fall under Alameda County’s guidelines for large indoor events: vaccinations required or a negative COVID test. “What we weren’t aware of was that, in December, the City of Oakland had put together an ordinance that required vaccination only,” Dr. Ahern said.

The September 1st report notes that “one of the clearest consequences [of the COVID-19 pandemic] so far is a surge in cynicism among young people about governments’ intentions.” “The poll shows that younger people are less likely to believe that the main motivation of governments in introducing pandemic-related restrictions is to limit the spread of the virus,” the think tank summarizes in comparison to older generations. 23 percent of respondents aged
