WELCH: TikTok’s War on the West, And Why We’re Still Losing It.

In The Square and the Tower, Prof. Niall Ferguson looks at the impact Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press; how the most influential figures of the Protestant Reformation, such as Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon, capitalised on the new technology to publish their pamphlets, disseminating them across the Holy Roman Empire and Europe. This, then, led to the radical ideas of a select brave minority in the early 16th century, reaching the minds and tongues of millions. The printing press – like modern social media platforms – came with some downsides, such as the second highest-selling book being the Malleus Maleficarum, which

MILLER: Big Tech’s Worst Hits of 2021.

It’s been a bad year for users of giant social media platforms, as people ranging from normal private citizens to prominent public figures, and even President Donald Trump, were suspended or banned for expressing their political opinions. News also broke during the year of users of these platforms, including children, being exposed to predators and cyber criminals.  Following 2020, which saw the story of Hunter Biden’s laptop suppressed, it’s hard to believe it could get worse for social media freedoms. But it seems like it has. The Silicon Valley oligarchs believe they are the Thought Police for the rest of

In the past few days, German politicians have declared messaging app Telegram a threat to democracy and a hotbed of radicalization. The latest round of attacks on free communication comes after weeks of protests in Germany against the COVID-19 measures. Protests have been mobilized via Telegram and other online community platforms. Since the beginning of December, the debate about the Telegram app has raged across the German media. Facebook Sued For Spying On Users Through Phone Cameras

Facebook is being sued again for reportedly spying on users through unauthorized use of their mobile phone cameras. According to Bloomberg: The lawsuit springs from media reports in July that the photo-sharing app appeared to be accessing iPhone cameras even when they weren’t actively being used. Facebook denied the reports and blamed a bug, which it said it was correcting, for triggering what it described as false notifications that Instagram was accessing iPhone cameras. In the complaint filed Thursday in federal court in San Francisco, New Jersey Instagram user Brittany Conditi contends the app’s use of the camera is intentional
