Vermont Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Ban All Abortion Restrictions

Following the latest horrifying trend of unabashed abortion promoting, a bill has been introduced in Vermont to ban all restrictions on abortions.

The bill, which has been co-sponsored by 90 members of the Vermont state House of Representatives, proposes “to recognize as a fundamental right the freedom of reproductive choice and to prohibit public entities from interfering with or restricting the right of an individual to terminate the individual’s pregnancy.”

‘Public entity’ is defined within the bill as all three branches of government, any agency or subdivision of the state government, all municipal governments, and any appointed official.

Language is also included to strip unborn children of any rights they possess. It reads, “A fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus shall not have independent rights under Vermont law.”

“When somebody’s made the very important, very personal, often very difficult decision to have an abortion, it is not for us to interfere,” commented Speaker of the House Mitzi Johnson (D). The bill has also garnered the support of Vermont’s Republican governor, Phil Scott.

If passed, this could be the most radical pro-abortion state law in the country. Aside from the blatant disregard for unborn human life, National Review writer Wesley J. Smith also noted additional concerns:

It could also permit odious practices beyond abortion, for example creating a free space for germ-line genetic engineering, as recently done in China. And what would prevent fetuses from being maintained in an artificial womb for purposes of experimentation — since they would have no rights, recognized human dignity, or legal status? … Since almost every jurisdiction in the world places restrictions on late terminations, Vermont could [also] become the viable-fetus abortion capital of the world.

On top of this bill introduced in the state House of Representatives, there is also a state constitutional amendment before the state Senate that would affirm the ‘right’ to an abortion.

Both the bill and the constitutional amendment have the full support of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. Megan Gallagher, speaking on behalf of the organization, commented: “States are a critical backstop to the further erosion and restriction of reproductive health care… We must pass the House abortion rights bill and the Senate equal rights constitutional amendment to ensure that reproductive rights are protected in Vermont.”
