Biden Officials Make Weekend Border Visit.
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas led a mid-March White House delegation to the southern border. According to a readout released, the delegation surveyed a Border Patrol facility and an HHS facility.
During the visit, Senior administration officials received operational briefings, updates, and tours of the facilities. They discussed capacity needs given the number of unaccompanied children and families arriving at our border, the complex challenges with rebuilding our gutted border infrastructure and immigration system, as well as improvements that must be made in order to restore safe and efficient procedures to process, shelter, and place unaccompanied children with family or sponsors.
Press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed, last Monday, that the Carrizo Springs, Texas, shelter for unaccompanied migrant minors was part of the visit—one of those shuttered under President Donald Trump and reopened under President Joe Biden.
The visit took place as the Biden White House struggles to manage skyrocketing arrivals of unaccompanied minors at the southwest border, necessitating the reopening of detention facilities that were closed under Trump. Shelters overseen by the Office of Refugee Resettlement reportedly took in 7,000+ migrant children in February 2021 alone—plus more than 1,500 in just the first four days of March.
“The figure for the first full month of the Biden administration is the most migrant children the refugee office has ever received in a February,” CBS reports.
In “Bloody Sunday” Remarks, Harris Takes Aim At “Targeted” Voting Laws.
Last Sunday, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris participated in events commemorating the 56th anniversary of the Selma Bridge Crossing, known as Bloody Sunday.
Harris delivered pre-taped remarks to Brown Chapel AME Church, which was the starting point for the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches. The vice president described measures like voter ID laws, mail-in voting limitations, and early voting restrictions as “laws to discriminate and to create barriers to voting—targeted at people of color, targeted at Native Americans, targeted at students, and targeted at Black voters.”
Biden signed an executive order on voting and released a fact sheet outlining actions agencies could take to “expand access to voter registration and election information.”
“On this 56th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, I signed an executive order to promote voting access. The right to vote is sacred and fundamental – and this is just the beginning of our work to ensure every American can freely exercise that right,” the @POTUS handle tweeted.
