Local and federal authorities have discovered an illegal, China-linked lab operating in a warehouse containing bioengineered mice and improperly stored disease samples including COVID-19, HIV, and herpes, in Fresno, California.
Around 1,000 lab mice were found inside the warehouse, 175 of which were already dead. Investigators discovered roughly 30 refrigerators and freezers, incubators, medical testing supplies, 800 different chemicals in various bottles, and at least 20 infectious disease agents identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Fresno County Health staff also “observed blood, tissue and other bodily fluid samples and serums; and thousands of vials of unlabeled fluids and suspected biological material.”
A person called Wang Zhaolin presented themselves as a representative for the warehouse’s unlicensed tenant Prestige BioTech – a “shady” Chinese company. Wang admitted to investigators that “these mice were genetically engineered to catch and carry the COVID-19 virus.” The company has been forthcoming with little else, however. Officials could not find any other Californian address for Prestige BioTech, and the company’s addresses in China were unverifiable, reports NBC News.
The lab was destroyed by officials on July 7, despite the ongoing investigation. “This is an unusual situation. I’ve been in government for 25 years. I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Reedley City Manager Nicola Zieba.
This follows a former Wuhan Institute of Virology employee turned whistleblower claiming that the Chinese Communist Party deliberately engineered COVID-19 to act as a “bioweapon.”
