Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise announced Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.
“After a few days of not feeling like myself this past week, I had some blood work done. The results uncovered some irregularities and after undergoing additional tests, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a very treatable blood cancer,” the Republican said in a statement.
Scalise said he has already begun treatment for the cancer which should take several months – adding, “I expect to work through this period and intend to return to Washington, continuing my work as Majority Leader and serving the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District.”
In 2017, James Hodgkinson – a 66-year old political Leftist and Bernie Sanders supporter – opened fire on a Republican practice session for the yearly Congressional Baseball Game. Six people were shot by Hodgkinson, including Steve Scalise who was hit in the hip. Scalise was airlifted to a nearby Washington, D.C. hospital in critical condition. The bullet had shattered bone, damaged organs, and caused severe internal bleeding. Scalise underwent multiple surgeries and spent several weeks in the hospital – eventually making a full recovery.
