Around 20 police officers have been injured following a night of violent Muslim-led rioting across the German capital of Berlin on Tuesday, which also saw one of the city’s main synagogues firebombed.
The city’s authorities were forced to deploy water canons and police dogs in an effort to disperse the crowds after they began hurling stones and pyrotechnics at the police while others set fire to barricades. Police officers were also deployed to protect the German memorial to the Holocaust as well as the Brandenburg Gate.
Two people also threw Molotov cocktails at a Berlin synagogue in the early hours of Wednesday morning before covering their faces and fleeing the scene. While police investigated the incident several hours later, another man charged at the synagogue, shouting “anti-Israeli slogans” before being apprehended.
The violence is understood to have begun following false reports that Israel killed least 500 people were killed due to an explosion at the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City earlier in the evening. It now looks increasingly like the bombing was an errant Islamic Jihad rocket attack.
“We are experiencing the effects of a religious war on the streets of the capital, in which our emergency services are becoming targets of religious fanaticism,” stated Berlin’s chief of police, Stephan Weh, on Wednesday morning.
“Above all, the families from the neighborhood around the synagogue are shocked and unsettled. Words become deeds. Hamas’ ideology of extermination against everything Jewish is also having an effect in Germany,” said the German Jewish Group, the Central Council of Jews.
