Just shy of 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2022. The rate per 100,000 people was 14.3 last year – the highest since 1941 when it registered at 15 per 100,000. The estimates released by the Centers for Disease Control mark a 2.6 percent increase compared to 2021.
According to the report, the suicide rate among men remains far higher than women, at 23.1 and 5.9 per 100,000 respectively. Compared to 2021, the number of suicide deaths by women increased by four percent, compared to just two percent among men.
The CDC data did have some positive news, as the rate of suicide for men under the age of 34 has decreased since last year. All age demographics for men over 35-years-old show increasing suicide rates, however. For women, the rate of suicide deaths for those under 24-years-old saw a decline, while it increased across the board for those 25-years-and-older.
Native American men were the most likely demographic to die by suicide, while white men where the second most likely. Hispanic women were the least likely to commit suicide according to the CDC.
Suicide deaths in America had seen a steady increase since the early 2000s until 2018 when the rate plateaued. It began climbing again in 2021.
