An anti-Israel protest turned wildly anti-Semitic in Philadelphia on Sunday evening, with marchers stopping outside a Jewish-owned restaurant, Goldie, chanting accussations of genocide.
Goldie, an affiliate of the CookNSolo group co-owned by Israeli-born Michael Solomonov, was swarmed by hundreds of protesters. Videos shared online depicted the crowd chanting the words, “Goldie, Goldie you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide!”
There is no connection between Goldie and the State of Israel, besides the Jewish link.
Witnesses reported the protesters affixed “Free Palestine” and “This is Genocide” stickers onto the facade of the business. The march was one of the largest demonstrations in support of Gaza in the city, according to the Philadelphia Free Palestine Coalition, the organization behind the march.
Governor Josh Shapiro’s condemned the incident, with U.S. Representative Brendan Boyle also expressing his dismay. In a statement, Boyle criticized any actions targeting businesses simply on account of their Jewish ownership, emphasizing that Philadelphia condemns such harassment and hate. Governor Shapiro affirmed that he had personally offered his support to Solomonov and planned to patronize the restaurant soon.
