Shots were fired at Union Station in Kansas City during Wednesday’s Super Bowl victory parade for the Kansas City Chiefs. Twenty-two people were shot and one person was killed, according to authorities. Kansas City Mercy Children’s Hospital is treating 11 children under 17 years old for injuries, nine have gunshot wounds.
Law enforcement officers have secured the area and are assessing the situation. Kansas City police currently have three individuals in custody. Reports indicate that the shooting may have occurred between invidivuals who knew each other, per Fox News.
“Shots have been fired around Union Station. Please leave the area,” the Kansas City Police Department posted to their official X (formerly Twitter) account. Subsequent updates by KCPD indicated that officers were attempting to clear Union Station and would only release individuals inside the building once it was secured. Authorities are still working to establish the exact number of victims.
The sudden shooting sparked pandemonium among the tens of thousands of fans and bystanders who were present. Emergency medical services were quickly dispatched to the scene. Six hundred KCPD officers were at the parade, supported by an additional 250 officers from outside agencies.
Federal agencies are assisting in the investigation, Mayor Quinton Lucas said during a press conference.
