Polling from the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, where Donald Trump currently leads Joe Biden, suggests the Democrats may not have any better alternatives to the 81-year-old incumbent.
Biden, dogged by concerns about his age and failing memory, trails Trump by two points in a head-to-head in the Keystone State, 45 to 43 — and by five points when third-party candidates such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Jill Stein are included.
Swapping Biden out for a younger model does not improve the Democrats’ fortunes, however. Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, trails Trump by an even greater nine points, 40 to 49.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, 56, who ran a shadow presidential campaign culminating in a debate against failed Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis in 2023, is still further behind Trump, trailing him by 15 points. This suggests the Democrats face issues finding a viable alternative to Biden well beyond any particular problems with his perennially unpopular running mate.
The Pennsylvania polling mirrors similar national polling, with Trump beating Harris by a greater margin than Biden and Newsom by a greater margin than Harris.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has also been peddled as an alternative to Biden and his Vice President, polls even worse than Newsom against Trump.
