Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) teased a possible run for Senate GOP leader to succeed Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who plans to step down in November. The Kentucky Republican floated his potential bid on X (formerly Twitter), stating that “thousands of people” had expressed their support for his potential bid.
A poll posted on X saw Sen. Paul head and shoulders above competitors John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota — with Paul taking 96 percent of the vote (Paul’s US Senate X account posted the poll). Elon Musk — the world’s second richest man and owner of X — expressed his support for Paul, adding that he didn’t think other candidates would post their own X polls out of concern they’d lose to the Kentucky Republican.

Paul has previously made headlines for his opposition to runaway government spending, foreign interventionism, and the government’s use of mass surveillance through data collection. His penchant for using the filibuster as a procedural tool has also garnered attention. Paul famously embarked on a 13-hour-long filibuster in 2013 against the appointment of John Brennan as the CIA director and again in 2015 in a 10-and-a-half-hour filibuster against the extension of the Patriot Act.
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, a 2024 independent presidential candidate, expressed his support for a potential Paul leadership bid shortly after McConnell announced he would step down. While Kennedy, in a post on X, praised Paul’s judgment and grit, some critics believe the independent presidential candidate’s backing of Paul is merely a calculated attempt to court libertarian voters.
