PBS has claimed that former President Donald Trump wants to ‘purge’ LGBTQ people from America. The allegation was made during a discussion between PBS White House correspondent Laura Barrón-López and anchor William Brangham in response to Trump’s criticism of providing transgender ‘treatment’ to children and allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports.
“A WHITE CHRISTIAN EVANGELICAL IDEAL.”
Brangham claimed that if reelected, Trump’s plans as President include “rolling back the rights of millions of LGBTQ people.” Barrón-López echoed Brangham’s assertion, saying that Trump “plans quick action” against LGBTQ individuals.
Barrón-López then claimed — without evidence — that Trump intends to “stop any and all acknowledgment of an acceptance of gender identity and LGBTQ people, period.” She then quoted Thomas Zimmer, a visiting professor of the history of ‘democracy’ at Georgetown University, who argued that Trump will “advance a white Christian evangelical ideal of American society.” Zimmer is German and also specializes in the history of Nazi Germany.
“FULL HITLER.”
The network then aired a clip of Zimmer, in which he stated that Trump and his supporters are “opposed to egalitarian democracy because [they] fundamentally [do] not agree that all people are equal or deserve to be treated as equal citizens. Only those who belong to the ‘true people,’ to real America, deserve that. And so everyone else needs to either be purged from the nation or, at the very least, accept their sort of lesser place in society.”
“Professor Zimmer added that that type of purging he’s talking about takes roots in the McCarthyism of the early 1950s, where they essentially tried to sweep away anyone across American society that would deviate from perceived norms,” Barrón-López added.
PBS’s assertions echo recent comments from Jill Biden, who claimed that opposition to exposing children to explicit LGBT material is like Naziism. The segment is an example of the Democrats’ “full Hitler” strategy, which seeks to portray Trump and his supporters as a Nazi-like threat to democratic norms.
On the campaign trail, Donald Trump has been talking about what he plans to do if elected in November. That includes rolling back LGBTQ rights.
