Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson faces mounting criticism over the runaway costs of providing food, shelter, and medical care for illegal immigrants. According to figures released by the “New Arrivals Mission” website, the city has shelled out nearly $300 million on over 38,000 new migrants, with roughly 9,700 still in city shelters since 2022.
The lack of transparency and competitive bidding for city contracts appears to be partly responsible for the astronomical cost of the illegal immigration crisis in Chicago. Over 90 percent of the contracts the city has awarded have gone to just three vendors, raising concerns of mismanagement and corruption.
‘IT’S ANOTHER SLAP IN THE FACE.’
“First and foremost, spending $300 million on illegal immigrants is a slap in the face of all the law-abiding citizens,” Tio Hardiman, a community activist and head of Violence Interrupters, said in a recent interview with The Center Square. Hardiman continued: “Then the money is not really being totally accounted for, that’s another slap in the face because the taxpayers have no say on how their money is being spent. That’s the reason why the law-abiding citizens voted down [real estate transfer tax referendum] Bring Home Chicago.”
“That’s why if the citizens could have voted on whether Chicago would remain a sanctuary city, they would have voted it down,” he added.
ILLEGALS BENEFIT DEMOCRATS.
Hardiman, echoing the criticism leveled by many Chicagoans, said that Mayor Johnson could end Chicago’s sanctuary status with the stroke of a pen but won’t because it benefits him and the Democrat Party politically.
“It’s not political with the homeless people that are already here because a lot of homeless people may not vote, they may not get involved,” the Violence Interrupters head said, adding: “So they figure you bring in illegal immigrants, you can get them to work and you can get them to vote. After two years, they become citizens because they already provide them a pathway to citizenship.”
