Republican lawmakers are lobbying the U.S. Secret Service to change the security plans for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They argue that the zone designated for protestors is too close to the event, creating a “mandated confrontational area” where convention attendees will run into anti-Republican activists. The Secret Service is refusing to make any changes to the controversial plans.
“I’m not a security expert, but this just looks like an obvious area of concern here that I think needs to be changed,” said Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson, who held a meeting with the Secret Service’s director, Kimberly A. Cheatle, to request changes.
Previously, U.S. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote to Cheatle expressing concerns about the current security plan. “I am deeply concerned about reports that the security perimeter around the Republican Convention site in Milwaukee may be creating a likely — and preventable — area of conflict between protestors and Convention attendees and delegates,” he wrote.
Cheatle claims she lacks the “authority” to change the current security arrangements, but Secret Service officials have briefed the press that they do not believe changes are justified.
Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s chief of communications, has insisted that “the security perimeter for the 2024 Republican National Convention is based on security considerations, including protective intelligence, risk, and threat assessments, and is developed to ensure the highest level of security while minimizing impacts to the public.”
DEI AND DANGEROUS INTENTIONS.
The Secret Service is accused of having undermined its effectiveness by pursuing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies under the Joe Biden regime. In April, an agent tasked with protecting Vice President Kamala Harris allegedly attacked her superior officer during a bizarre episode in which she pelted colleagues with menstrual pads. Agents have raised questions about her dubious record, suggesting she should never have been hired in the first place.
Concerns have also been raised that Democrat lawmakers and others are purposely undermining the personal security of Donald Trump and his supporters. After Bennie G. Thompson, Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, put forward legislation attempting to strip Trump of Secret Service protection if he is imprisoned in New York, legal analyst Alan Dershowitz argued the Democrats “want him killed.”
The RNC convention will be held from July 15 to July 18.
