Rachel Maddow, the MSNBC host and arch-Russiagate conspiracist, is claiming the Supreme Court has authorized Donald Trump to send “right-wing death squads” after his opponents with its ruling on presidential immunity.
“Donald Trump and his counsel asked for this 100 percent absolute immunity thing, which was insane. I would say they got 105 percent of what they were asking for,” she said of the ruling, which guts the lawfare prosecutions Joe Biden’s Justice Department is bringing against the America First leader.
“This is a death squad ruling,” Maddow alleged. “This is a ruling that says that as long as you can construe it as an official or quasi-official act, you can do absolutely anything—absolutely anything—and never be held accountable, not only while you are President, but forever,” she added, claiming Trump has previously “activated pro-Trump paramilitary groups.”
She concluded, “If you have somebody who is a criminal or is authoritarian-minded when they get in there armed with this ruling, there is nothing they cannot do.”
In fact, the Supreme Court ruling is clear that a President only has a presumption in favor of immunity from prosecution when “exercising his core constitutional powers,” which do not include sending “death squads” after U.S. citizens.
Presidents also remain accountable outside the regular court system through constitutionally proper impeachment proceedings in Congress.
