The House Oversight Committee, chaired by Representative James Comer (R-KY), says it has issued a subpoena for testimony from United States Secret Service (USSS) Director Kimberly Cheatle. Cheatle was initially slated to appear before the House committee next week. However, Joe Biden‘s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is believed to have intervened on behalf of the USSS Director, throwing her testimony into question.
Following the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump in Bulter, Pennsylvania, on Saturday—which resulted in the death of rallygoer Corey Comperatore—the House Oversight Committee asked that Cheatle voluntarily appear for a hearing to answer for the apparent lapse in security. Initially, it appeared she had agreed.
“On the day of the deadly attack, the Committee sent a written request for your voluntary attendance at a public hearing on July 22, 2024. The Committee next wrote to you on July 15, 2024, requesting specific information in anticipation of your testimony at the July 22 public hearing,” Chairman Comer writes. He adds: “Initially, the Secret Service committed to your attendance.”
“Subsequently, however, DHS officials appear to have intervened, and your attendance is now in question. In addition, since DHS’s intervention, there have been no meaningful updates or information shared with the Committee,” the House Oversight letter announcing the subpoena continues.
Comer’s letter concludes: “The lack of transparency and failure to cooperate with the Committee on this pressing matter by both the DHS and Secret Service further calls into question your ability to lead the Secret Service and necessitates the attached subpoena compelling your appearance before the Oversight Committee.”
The National Pulse previously reported that Cheatle has refused to resign following the deadly attempted assassination against Trump.
