A Marine Corps veteran alleges she was removed from a Delta Airlines flight last week because of her T-shirt raising awareness regarding veteran suicide. Catherine Banks boarded a Delta flight last Wednesday at San Francisco International Airport, wearing a shirt with the message, “Do not give in to the war within. End veteran suicide.” However, a male flight attendant approached her after boarding, requesting her to leave the plane.
“He said, ‘You need to get off the plane,’ and I was like, ‘What did I do?'” Banks said in a recent interview describing the incident. After deplaning, Banks claims the flight attendant then informed her that the shirt she wore was considered threatening.
“He said that shirt you’re wearing is threatening,” the Marine veteran recalled. She continued: “I said, ‘Are you kidding me? I’m a Marine Corps vet. I’m going to see my Marine sister. I’ve been in the Marine Corps for 22 years and worked for the Air Force for 15 years. I’m going to visit her.’ He said, ‘I don’t care about your service, and I don’t care about her service. The only way you’re going to get back on the plane is if you take it off right now.’”
Eventually, Banks was allowed back on the flight, but was required to sit at the back and consequently missed her connecting flight.
“We appreciate [Banks’s] patience as we continued to work to understand what occurred during this event,” Delta said in a statement on Monday, adding: “Most importantly, we are thankful for her service to our country.” The airline says it considers the matter resolved.
