A new survey of likely voters suggests an unprecedented level of support for President-elect Donald J. Trump’s plan to deport the over 20 million illegal immigrants residing in the United States. Trump has stated that the initial phase will begin with the deportation of individuals identified as dangerous and violent criminals—including members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA).
The poll, conducted by Rassmussen Reports following the 2024 presidential election, indicates 76 percent of respondents believe it is important that the government stop illegal immigration. Additionally, 64 percent of likely voters responding to the survey say they approve of President-elect Trump’s plan to enact “the largest deportation program in American history.”
Voters also indicated they overwhelmingly believe that Trump will make good on his deportation pledge, with 72 percent saying it is likely “that Trump will keep his promise.”
Some of the strongest support for a government crackdown on illegal immigration comes from Hispanic voters, with 70 percent saying stopping individuals from unlawfully entering the United States is important to them. Hispanic voters, by the same percentage, also say they approve of Trump’s deportation plans.
Even among Democrats, border security is an important issue. According to the Rassmussen Reports data, 61 percent of Democrat likely voters say stopping illegal immigration is important to them. Nearly 40 percent of Democrats say they approve of Trump’s plan to deport the over 20 million illegal immigrants currently in the United States.
The data suggests that President-elect Trump has strong national and bipartisan support to act swiftly and aggressively to end the nation’s illegal immigration crisis at the southern border and remove those who have unlawfully entered the country. Earlier this week, Trump announced the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Tom Homan, will oversee the deportation program as his border and immigration czar.
