Salwan Momika, an Iraqi-born critic of Islam, was fatally shot on Wednesday night in a residence in Södertälje, located in Stockholm County, Sweden. The incident occurred around 11 PM local time, just hours before Momika was scheduled to appear in court over charges related to his Qur’an-burning demonstrations.
The 38-year-old, previously identified as a liberal atheist from Iraq’s Assyrian Christian minority, had sought refuge in Sweden in 2018 due to threats of torture and inhumane treatment in his homeland. The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports that the attack was captured live on TikTok, with the broadcast only ceasing once police arrived and switched off the device.
Authorities have arrested five individuals in connection with the murder, with investigations considering the possibility of the attacker entering the apartment via the building’s roof. Momika gained attention in 2023 after burning copies of the Qur’an in several protests in Sweden. His actions, particularly outside a Stockholm mosque and the Iraqi embassy, led to Muslim riots and strained diplomatic relations with Iraq and Turkey.
Momika’s demonstrations sparked debates on freedom of expression and religious sensitivity in Sweden, culminating in criminal charges against him for incitement against an ethnic group. The case’s verdict, initially set for Thursday morning, has been halted by his death. A court spokesman said legal proceedings cannot continue against someone deceased.
Momika’s death comes against a backdrop of heightened security concerns over Islamist threats linked to anti-Islam demonstrations.
