The Aga Khan, Prince Karim al-Hussaini, has passed away at the age of 88, the Aga Khan Development Network has announced. The spiritual leader of the Ismaili sect of Islam died peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, surrounded by family. His followers, who regard him as a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, mourn the loss of their leader.
Born in Switzerland, the Aga Khan became the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims in 1957 at the age of 20, following the death of his grandfather. He was known for his worldwide philanthropic efforts, directing funds through the Aga Khan Development Network, which he founded and chaired. He had British citizenship, but resided primarily in France later in life.
The Aga Khan’s personal life saw notable episodes, including two marriages. His first marriage to British model Sally Croker-Poole resulted in two sons and a daughter. The marriage lasted 25 years before ending in divorce. In 1998, he married Princess Gabrielle, a former German pop singer who converted to Islam, adopting the name Inaara. This marriage also ended in separation after six years, producing one son.
The Aga Khan was renowned for his passion for racehorses. Among his prized possessions was a £100 million yacht named after one of his horses, Alamshar. Another famous horse, Shergar, gained notoriety after being abducted by gunmen in Ireland in 1983 and never recovered.
The Aga Khan Development Network expressed condolences to the Aga Khan’s family and the global Ismaili community while reaffirming its commitment to continuing his life’s work. The announcement of his successor is anticipated soon, with his eldest son, Prince Rahim, aged 53, expected to assume leadership duties.
