Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) criticized the Democratic Party this week, describing its previous tactics as “toxic” during an appearance on the Somebody’s Gotta Win podcast with Tara Palmeri. The Pennsylvania Senator asserted that the party’s approach had largely involved “shaming and scolding” voters. Discussing the party’s ability to attract white male voters, Fetterman painted a picture of Democrats adopting a patronizing tone, often implying that voters were uninformed or misguided.
“I think their primary currency was shaming and scolding and talking down to people and telling them, ‘Hey, I know better than you, or you’re dopes, or you’re a bro, or you’re ignorant or, how can you be this dumb? I can’t imagine it. And then, by the way, they’re fascists. How can you vote for that?” Fetterman said, adding: “They don’t support insurrection and those things. And if you go to an extreme, and you become a boutique kind of proposition, then you’re going to lose the argument. And we have done that.”
When host Tara Palmeri asked Fetterman about strategies to win back white male voters, Fetterman expressed skepticism. He questioned whether it was feasible, citing the perception that masculinity itself is often blamed for broader societal ills. Fetterman noted that the party’s rigid definitions of acceptability contribute to some voters seeking alternatives during elections.
Fetterman’s comments underscore ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party over effectively engaging with the American voter base. Additionally, his emphasis on building a broader Democratic Party may further the divide between Fetterman and the Democratic members of the “Squad,” who continue to back racial and other demographic divisions as necessary for the Democratic Party’s success.
John Fetterman explains why Democrat party brand is toxic, and is not sure the Democrats can ‘win white men back’:
Tara Palmeri: “Why is the Democratic Party viewed as toxic by so many? Even people inside the party acknowledge that.”
