Marc Fogel, an American teacher detained in Russia since 2021, has returned to the United States following his release from a Russian prison where he faced drug charges. Landing back on U.S. soil late on Tuesday, February 11, Fogel expressed gratitude and described himself as “the luckiest man alive.” His return was celebrated at the White House by President Donald J. Trump, whom Fogel praised as a “hero” in his first interview since gaining freedom.
“I want you to know I’m not a hero in this at all. And President Trump is a hero,” an emotional Fogel said at the White House with an American flag draped over his shoulders. He continued: “These men that came from the diplomatic service are heroes. The senators and representatives that passed legislation in my honor to get me home are the heroes.”
“I am in awe of what they all did,” Fogel added.
Fogel’s case raised accusations of preferential treatment by the former Biden government in the U.S., as Fogel was imprisoned in Russia before black lesbian basketball player Brittney Griner. However, the Biden government did not insist that Fogel—unlike Griner—be part of the exchange that saw the U.S. release infamous arms dealer Viktor “Merchant of Death” Bout. Both Fogel and Griner were arrested in Russia for similar crimes.
Once home, Fogel extended appreciation to his family, acknowledging their unwavering support during his incarceration. “My family has been a force,” he stated, noting the vibrant spirit of his 95-year-old mother during the challenging period.
