The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot an illegal immigrant suspect in Franklin Park, Illinois, on Friday. The illegal immigrant, who had a history of reckless driving, attempted to evade arrest by driving his car at the officers, striking and dragging one of them.
According to DHS, the officer opened fire after feeling his life was in danger. Both the officer and the illegal immigrant were transported to a local hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated, “We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement.”
The incident occurred during ICE’s “Midway Blitz,” an immigration enforcement operation in Chicago. McLaughlin also highlighted the challenges officers face, citing “viral social media videos and activists encouraging illegal aliens to resist law enforcement” as increasing risks for ICE personnel.
The injured officer is expected to make a full recovery after having suffered lacerations and significant leg injuries.
