🎯IMPACT: The decision opens the field for new Democratic candidates and increases the GOP’s chances in the upcoming elections.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) has abandoned his campaign for reelection. The announcement was made on Monday, amid a growing scandal involving widespread fraud linked to the Somali community and rising pressure from fellow Democrats.
The decision marks a significant shift in the North Star State’s political landscape as the 2026 midterm elections approach, and reverses the failed 2024 vice presidential candidate’s September announcement that he would run for a third gubernatorial term.
Minnesota has seen Democratic victories in every statewide office since 2006, but Walz’s perceived weaknesses have attracted potential Republican challengers, such as state House Speaker Lisa Demuth. Notably, state government whistleblowers have reported that the Walz administration was aware of Somali fraud in the state years ago, but quashed attempts to expose it and threatened retaliation against officials who pushed the issue.
“Tim Walz is 100% responsible for massive fraud in Minnesota. We let Tim Walz know of fraud early on, hoping for a partnership in stopping fraud but no, we got the opposite response,” over 400 Minnesota Department of Human Services workers revealed in a December statement. “Tim Walz systematically retaliated against whistleblowers using monitoring, threats, repression, and did his best to discredit fraud reports. Instead of partnership, we got the full weight of retaliation by Tim Walz,” they added.
Attention now turns to who will enter the race for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party nomination to replace Walz, with figures including U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), state Attorney General Keith Ellison (D-MN), and state Secretary of State Steve Simon (D-MN) regarded as possible contenders.
