Norwegian police have released surveillance footage images of a suspected individual connected to an explosion that occurred outside the U.S. Embassy in Oslo early Sunday morning. The images depict a person whose face is hidden, wearing dark clothing and carrying a backpack.
Officials have determined that the blast was triggered by an improvised explosive device (IED) positioned at the embassy entrance. The explosion resulted in minor damage, with no injuries reported. Authorities responded to the scene around 1:00 AM local time.
The investigation is being treated as a top priority. In addition to the released images, police are examining a video that was uploaded to Google Maps around the time of the incident but has since been removed; reports indicate it showed Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was recently killed in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Tehran.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide described the incident as “unacceptable” and stressed the need to protect diplomatic premises. The U.S. State Department has stated it is looking into the matter as well.
Police are asking the public for any tips about the suspect or any suspicious activity in the vicinity between midnight and 2:00 AM local time. Social media images from the scene revealed broken glass and damage in the area near the embassy’s consular section.
