President Donald J. Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, pausing the 39-day conflict in the Middle East. The announcement came just 90 minutes before the deadline he had set for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face devastating strikes.

Under the agreement, Iran will lift its blockade of the vital shipping lane in return for a temporary halt to American strikes on Iranian infrastructure. The deal was brokered with help from Pakistan.

In his statement, Trump made the conditional nature of the pause clear: “Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.”

The news triggered an immediate market reaction, with oil prices falling almost 17 percent and stock markets rising.

Although Iran has accepted the ceasefire, it has warned that it will restart attacks if the United States violates the truce. Talks aimed at securing a longer-term peace agreement are scheduled to continue in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.

Trump expressed hope that the region could now enter what he called a “Golden Age of the Middle East!!!”

A bill in Canada that could criminalize quoting the Bible as hate speech has sparked backlash from religious and conservative groups across the country. “Bill C-9 makes it easier for people of faith and others to be criminally charged because of views that other people take offense to,” warned Andrew Lawton, a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Conservative opposition.

Bill C-9, known as the Combatting Hate Act, was introduced by Minister for Justice and Attorney General Sean Fraser, and has already passed through the House of Commons, roughly equivalent to the U.S. House of Representatives. It will be debated in the Canadian Senate later this year.

The bill removes two sections of Canada’s criminal code: 319(3)(b) and 319(3.1)(b). Both specifically state that someone cannot be found guilty of hate speech if they “expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text”.

Marc Miller, an MP from the ruling Liberal Party who supports the bill, has cited passages from Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Romans condemning homosexual acts as examples of religious text that could be classed as hate speech. “How do we somehow constitute this as being said in good faith? Clearly, there are situations in these texts where statements are hateful. They should not… be a defense,” he said during a House Justice Committee hearing.

The proposed changes have drawn criticism from Christians in Canada. “This narrowly framed exemption has served for many years as an essential safeguard to ensure that Canadians are not criminally prosecuted for their sincere, truth-seeking expression of beliefs made without animus and grounded in long-standing religious traditions,” the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in a letter last year.

The gang is designated as a terrorist organization in the United States, El Salvador, and Guatemala. It is involved in various kinds of illegal activity, including murder, kidnapping, robbery, assault, drug trafficking, extortion, and prostitution. It is a multi-ethnic gang, although its membership draws heavily from Mexico and Central America.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office has said it will assist with the following investigation. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will also assist with the investigation.

The Trump administration is considering shutting down international flights in cities where local Democrats shield illegal immigrants from federal immigration enforcement actions through open-border sanctuary policies. Newly confirmed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin revealed late Monday that the administration is considering the move in response to the ongoing partial government shutdown of DHS, which is impacting funding for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and customs agents, among other agencies.

“I believe sanctuary cities are not lawful,” Mullin said during a television interview. “So, we’re going to take a hard look at this. One area we may take a hard look at is some of these cities that have international airports. If they’re a sanctuary city, should they really be processing customs into their city?”

Mullin continued, “If they’re a ‘sanctuary city’ and they’re receiving international flights—and we’re asking them to partner with us at the airport, but once they walk out of the airport, they’re not going to enforce immigration policy—maybe we need to have a really hard look at that.”

The new Homeland Security Secretary stressed that his department needs to prioritize jurisdictions willing to work with federal immigration enforcement officials. “I’m not going outside the policies that Congress passed for me, but we’re saying that you’ve got to partner with us,” Mullin said.

Withholding customs officers from Democrat-controlled sanctuary cities with international airports could pose a serious economic threat to those jurisdictions—especially those heavily reliant on tourism to sustain local businesses. Among the major cities that could be impacted are Los Angeles, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, and New York.

Carlos Corte-Corte, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador, was rearrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on March 31 after being released from jail by a local judge despite facing serious criminal charges. The Ecuadoran national had been charged on March 28 with second-degree kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child after luring a four-year-old girl from a laundromat in Patchogue, Long Island, to a nearby park where she was found by police.

Despite the charges, Suffolk County District Judge James F. Leonick released Corte-Corte on supervised release without bond. Notably, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that Corte-Corte had entered the U.S. illegally on at least three occasions in 2020 and had been removed three times, only to return for a fourth time.

Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis criticized the decision to release Corte-Corte, stating, “Sanctuary politicians must stop putting politics above public safety. This type of insanity leads to more crimes and more innocent victims.” She added that thanks to ICE law enforcement, Corte-Corte is now off the streets.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney expressed disagreement with the judge’s decision to release the alleged kidnapper. “I think if you look at the facts of the case, clearly they’re concerning,” Tierney said.
