The Biden government’s Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, announced on Tuesday that gun violence is being officially recognized as a public health crisis. Dr. Murthy also called for a ban on so-called “assault weapons” and prohibiting civilian usage of large-capacity magazines.
“Firearm violence is an urgent public health crisis that has led to loss of life, unimaginable pain, and profound grief for far too many Americans,” Biden’s Surgeon General said in a statement. Additionally, several notable medical organizations are backing Murthy’s declaration, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Public Health Association, and the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Murthy’s declaration calls for increased funding for community violence intervention (CVI) programs. Critics contend CVI programs lack effectiveness and serve as a vehicle for pushing a progressive ideological agenda that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion over public safety. According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions: “CVI provides a public health approach to gun violence prevention, addressing the unique needs of the community where systemic racism, disinvestments, and trauma occur.”
Additionally, pro-Second Amendment groups argue that Murthy’s call to take gun regulations “out of the realm of politics and put it into the realm of public health” is meant to silence activists and subvert the will of voters who’ve backed looser gun laws.
The National Pulse has previously reported that while the Biden government is focused on gun violence and racism as public health issues, little is being done to face real medical crises. A recent study shows 1.3 billion people across the world are expected to be diagnosed with diabetes by 2050. Additionally, new projections predict upwards of 60 percent of Americans will develop some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by the year 2050.
