Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was found guilty of 16 counts of public corruption by a jury in his federal corruption trial. The New Jersey Democrat was accused of selling his office for bribes and assisting the foreign governments of Egypt and Qatar. Each count carries a potential sentence of upwards of 20 years. Among the charges, Menendez has been found guilty of conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, and obstruction of justice.
Last September, The National Pulse reported that the senior New Jersey Democratic Senator was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York over allegations of public corruption involving attempts to influence a federal prosecution and participation in a foreign influence operation. According to federal prosecutors, Menendez worked to disrupt the prosecution of long-time donor and associate Jose Uribe and essentially acted as an unregistered foreign agent for the Arab Republic of Egypt.
Menendez and his wife Nadine received payments in cash, gold bars, and a luxury vehicle for their efforts on behalf of Uribe and the Egyptian government. Additionally, according to prosecutors, the scheme to ensure military aid for Egypt ran through Menendez’s wife and Wael “Will” Hana, an Egyptian-American businessman.
In June, Menendez announced he would run for re-election in New Jersey as an independent candidate, foregoing the Democratic primary. Polling conducted in October of last year found that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un was more favorably viewed in New Jersey than Sen. Menendez.
Meanwhile, the trial for Menendez’s wife, Nadine, has been delayed as she receives treatment for breast cancer.
