With just 21 days before Election Day, new data suggests Vice President Kamala Harris is beginning to lose ground to President Donald J. Trump. Polling released over the weekend by NBC shows a deadlocked race; however, Harris has lost ground to Trump on several key voter issues and continues to see her favorability among the electorate slide.
“It is a tie game here weeks before the election,” explained Steve Kornacki, a national political correspondent with NBC News on Sunday. “[O]ur last poll taken in the wake of that September debate, Harris had opened up that advantage over Trump—gone in our new poll.”
According to the data, both Harris and Trump are slightly underwater in terms of favorability. Among respondents, 43 percent said they have a positive view of Trump, while 51 percent said they have a negative opinion. Meanwhile, Harris’s numbers were nearly the same as her Republican opponent’s, with 43 percent of respondents saying they had a positive opinion of her and 49 percent saying they had a negative opinion.
While Trump’s favorability remains relatively unchanged from the last NBC polls, Harris has seen a significant loss of ground. In September, 48 percent of respondents said they had a positive view of the Democratic Party nominee, while just 45 percent said they had a negative view.
Additionally, Trump has expanded his advantage among the electorate on several key voter issues. Trump now holds a 25-point edge on immigration and border security, up from 21 points in September. On the cost of living and inflation, Trump’s edge has grown from eight points last month to eleven points in October.
Harris, meanwhile, has lost ground as the ‘candidate of change,’ with her nine-point edge sliding to just five points over the last month.
