Pete Hegseth, nominated by President-elect Donald Trump for Defense Secretary, finds himself at the center of a Brett Kavanaugh-style witch hunt, with fresh allegations published by the New Yorker alleging Hegseth’s inappropriate conduct during prior roles with veteran advocacy groups.
The claims have hit the betting markets heavily, with Hegseth’s odds of being confirmed slashed in recent hours. The New Yorker claims Hegseth’s behavior included drunken misconduct and sexism during his time leading Veterans for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) from 2013 to 2016.
One incident described Hegseth being drunk at a strip club and allegedly attempting to join performers on stage. The report is believed to hinge on a so-called “whistleblower” who sources close to Hegseth have dismissed as a “disgruntled former associate.”
The news follows recent allegations about a sexual encounter between Hegseth and a married woman. Hegseth settled a claim from her and her husband in 2020, though the stories have resurfaced in recent weeks.
“The matter was fully investigated and I was completely cleared and that’s where I am going to leave it,” Hegseth told reporters in November.
