At least two civilians have perished in the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California, and numerous injuries have been reported as wildfires grip the Golden State. The Eaton Fire, covering around 2,227 acres as of the time of publication, has obliterated approximately 100 structures. Meanwhile, the Palisades Fire, in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles County, has devastated around 1,000 structures and engulfed around 5,000 acres. Both blazes are currently at zero percent containment.
A third blaze, the Hurst Fire, has burned around 500 acres northeast of San Fernando,
LA County Chair Supervisor Kathryn Barger has urgently advised residents, “When they ask you to evacuate, evacuate. This is not a drill.” Over 80,000 people are currently subject to evacuation orders.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna has said two people have been arrested for using the disaster as an opportunity to loot, warning opportunists, “You’re going to be caught, you’re going to be arrested and you’re going to be prosecuted.”
Previously, President-elect Donald J. Trump has warned that California wildfires driven by drought and the Santa Ana winds are exacerbated by poor management on the part of Democratic officials. Consequently, controlled burns are not carried out, and dried-out leaves, trees, and other debris are allowed to build up.
He is currently chastising Governor Gavin Newsom for blocking water management reforms.
