The Senate has confirmed former Texas state representative and professional football player Scott Turner as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with a vote of 55-44. Turner, who served on the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during President Donald J. Trump’s first term, is now responsible for supporting roughly 4.3 million low-income families through various programs, including public housing, rental subsidies, and vouchers.
During his appearance before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, Turner outlined his vision to mend policy failures, reduce dependency on government assistance, and focus on increasing housing construction.
“As a country, we’re not building enough housing,” he said. “We need millions more homes of all kinds, single family, apartments, condos, duplexes, manufactured housing, you name it, so individuals and families can have a roof over their heads and a place to call home.”
He further expressed his commitment to “help people get off government assistance, become self-sustainable, and achieve the American dream.”
During President Trump’s first term, HUD was led by Dr. Ben Carson.
