A bill introduced by Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL) to deport illegal immigrants convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) offenses passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday. The legislation, which passed 246 to 160, saw support from 37 House Democrats, but 160 Democrats opposed it. Senior Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), were among those opposing the measure.
The bill, named after Jeremy and Angel Seay—a couple from Moore’s community killed by an illegal immigrant drunk driver—and Arizona police officer Brandon Mendoza, who was also killed by an illegal immigrant driving under the influence, aims to hold illegal immigrants accountable for such crimes.
“Today’s vote in the House sends a clear message: if you are a guest in this country, and you break our laws and put American lives at risk by driving under the influence, there will be consequences,” Moore stated. He expressed dismay at the 160 Democrats who voted against the bill, saying, “It just shows that if it comes to anything about holding illegal immigrants accountable, even if it’s killing our own people in drunk driving cases, they’re against any kind of reforms on immigration.”
At a press conference promoting the “One Big Beautiful Bill” currently before the U.S. Senate on Thursday, President Donald J. Trump was joined by Joe Abraham, an “Angel Dad” whose 20-year-old daughter was killed by a Guatemalan illegal in a hit-and-run. He said the reconciliation legislation would provide Border Patrol, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and other agencies with the resources necessary to “end this invasion once and for all.”
