‘Explosive Diarrhea’ Lettuce Parasite Spreads to Three More States.

The parasite causes cyclosporiasis, which produces symptoms such as “watery diarrhea, fatigue, and loss of appetite,” according to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). Cyclosporiasis symptoms also include “bloating, cramping, and weight loss,” according to the Centers. “Without treatment, symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to a month or longer,” wrote the CDC on its website. Public health officials have urged consumers to wash fresh produce thoroughly and cook it when possible, as heat can kill the parasite.
