Several Washington, D.C. residents were caught on camera being robbed at gunpoint in the district’s swanky new “Wharf” neighborhood. Ski-masked gunmen emerged from a car, relieving four dining patrons of their wallets, purses, jewelry and cell phones. Security cameras on the 600 block of Wharf Street caught the entire incident on tape.

D.C.’s Metropolitan Police admit that armed robberies are up nearly 70 percent on last year, with homicides up 35 percent, and the city witnessing a 39 percent increase in violent crime overall. The Metropolitan Police Department’s numbers have dwindled to just over 3,350 officers – the least amount of officers the department has employed in 50 years.
The Wharf was recently developed into an upscale dining and nightlight hotspot, stretching over a mile along the Anacostia River waterfront which also features high-end retail, restaurants, music venues, and several flagship hotels. Prior to the facelift, the area was mostly consisted of warehouses, seedy nightclubs, and a handful of seafood restaurants.
