Tom Suozzi emerged victorious over Mazi Pilip during Tuesday’s special election for the third congressional district in New York. The election was conducted to fill the position previously held by former Republican Rep. George Santos who was expelled following a fraud indictment. The Associated Press announced Suozzi’s win shortly after 10 p.m. Eastern Time, with the count standing at 58.7 percent in favor of Suozzi against Pilip’s 41.3 percent, with 52 percent of the votes accounted for at 10:15 p.m.
Upon Suozzi’s swearing-in, the balance in the Democrats’ favor will shift, holding 213 seats to the Republicans’ 219 in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Democrats’ win leaves three vacancies in the lower chamber. Suozzi is no stranger to this seat, having held it for three previous consecutive terms before declining to run for re-election in 2022.
Pilip was a Democrat that won the Republican nomination. Born in Ethiopia, Pilip migrated to Israel at 12 before moving to the United States.
