A young Afghan “refugee” named Atiqullah Oryakhail, who entered the UK illegally, has been sentenced to just 57 months in prison for the attempted murder of a 16-year-old over an unpaid £50 debt, Bournemouth Crown Court announced today. The 18-year-old assailant had fled the UK after the brutal attack, only to be detained months later while attempting to enter Austria from Italy, and subsequently returned to the UK for trial.
The court heard that Oryakhail stabbed the victim in the back and slashed his arm for failing to repay the loan, intended as a wedding gift. The assault, which resulted in significant blood loss, took place in Boscombe, Dorset, and was captured on CCTV.
Oryakhail had been granted asylum in the UK after being smuggled in from Afghanistan and had met the victim and his older brother while studying at Bournemouth and Poole College in Dorset. Oryakhail will serve time in a young offenders’ institution, while decisions surrounding his potential deportation will fall under the jurisdiction of the Home Office.
