Big Business and the Administrative State: A Match Made in the Swamp

This article was originally posted at The Hill and co-authored by Jane Robbins, an attorney and senior fellow at the American Principles Project. “The swamp” has become a catch-all term for what’s wrong with Washington. The word — also known as the administrative state — evokes images of arrogant bureaucrats enforcing their preferred policies regardless of the desires of the voters. But a key component of the swamp isn’t housed in the granite jungle of D.C. but in corporate boardrooms across the country. A leftist professor once claimed that “the myth of individual greatness is a myth.” The same could be said of the

“Transgenderism” Marks Next Step in Leftist War on the Family

This article was originally posted at Crisis Magazine and co-authored by Jane Robbins, an attorney and senior fellow at the American Principles Project. The Los Angeles Times recently published an approving article about schools’ introducing kindergartners to gender dysphoria (otherwise known as transgenderism). This topic has been much in the news lately, especially after a California charter school—without notifying parents—held a “gender-reveal ceremony” for a confused little boy. The teacher then read to the other children, now confused as well but for other reasons, from a book written by a dysphoric teenager. The Times thinks this is all fine because “experts” from the radical Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) say

Government Panel Urges Congress to Create Massive Database on U.S. Citizens

This article was originally posted at Townhall and co-authored by Jane Robbins, an attorney and senior fellow at the American Principles Project. Do you want the government tracking you, throughout your life, by combining your higher-education records with your employment, wage, and other workforce data? Such a “student unit-record” tracking system is fortunately illegal in America by virtue of a statutory ban. But deep-pocketed data-mongers such as the Gates Foundation-funded Data Quality Campaign have been agitating to overturn this ban, the better to put every American citizen under a microscope for study. And now a government commission has come perilously close to endorsing that frightening concept. The

Mental Health Assessments or Standardized Testing? Lines Are Blurring.

This piece was co-authored by Jane Robbins, an attorney and senior fellow at the American Principles Project. In The Wall Street Journal recently, New Hampshire physician Dr. Aida Cerundolo blew the whistle on faux mental-health assessment of public-school students in the Granite State. Some K-8 students are being subjected to blanket screening by untrained, unlicensed personnel, with serious questions about use or protection of the resulting records. And parents not only haven’t consented to this process, they haven’t even been told it’s happening. We have written about the disturbing conversion of public schools from places of learning into therapeutic institutions

President Trump Issues Order to Rein in Department of Education

This piece was co-authored by Jane Robbins, an attorney and senior fellow at the American Principles Project. On Wednesday President Trump issued an executive order directing Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to determine which regulations and guidance documents issued by the U.S. Department of Education (USED) have unlawfully overreached on education policy to the detriment of state and local control. According to a senior USED official, Rob Goad, the order “puts an end to this overreach, ensuring that states and localities are free to make educational decisions as required by” three federal statutes that prohibit federal “direction, supervision, or control”

Why Does Betsy DeVos Keep Making False Claims About Common Core?

Monday, in an appearance on Fox News, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos once again asserted that “[t]here isn’t really any Common Core anymore” and that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), passed last year by Congress and signed by an enthusiastic President Obama, “essentially does away with the whole argument about Common Core.” You can watch DeVos’ full interview below: BILL HEMMER: When it comes to Common Core, will the administration withhold funds for states that pursue Common Core education, in order to get them to change their mind? DEVOS: Well as you probably know, the Every Student Succeeds Act, which

Trump to CEOs on Common Core: “We Have to End It” (VIDEO)

At his CEO Business Town Hall today at the White House, President Trump reiterated his campaign promise to end Common Core and return to local control of education: Common Core, I mean, we have to bring education more local. We can’t be managing education from Washington. When I go out to Iowa, when I go out to the different states and I talk, they want to run their school programs locally and they’ll do a much better job… And I like the fact of getting rid of Common Core. You know, Common Core, to me, we have to end it. We

Obama Administration Wants to Kiss Your Local Schools Goodbye

If the Obama administration and its supporters have their way, the suburban neighborhood school could be headed for extinction. In a veritable symphony of bureaucratic coordination, the administration has figured out how to recruit three cabinet departments, liberal non-profits, and deep-pocketed foundations to this effort. It can be tough even to follow the sophisticated strategy for accomplishing this (and the president prefers it that way), but if we value our liberty, it’s worth a bit of effort to understand this scheme. The administration is maneuvering to replace local control in education (and in other areas) with school systems that extend
